Building Energy Codes Initiative

The goal of our project is to replace Sioux Falls' outdated residential building codes with updated standards that save residents money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Why It Matters

IECC building codes set the minimum energy efficiency requirements for new buildings. Nearly every other city in the upper Midwest has adopted the most recent 2018 or 2021 codes, but Sioux Falls is still using the 2009 codes for new construction.  This outdated standard results in inefficient, leaky homes with higher energy bills and larger carbon footprints.

An independent analysis found that switching to the 2018 codes would reduce energy use by 23% and save households over $600 per year.

What Can We Do?

We need volunteers to attend city council meetings, testify, organize community education efforts, and meet with community decision makers.  We will provide background information.
